What is Jobseeker's Allowance?

Jobseeker's Allowance (JA) is a means-tested weekly payment for people who are unemployed and do not qualify for Jobseeker's Benefit, or whose Jobseeker's Benefit has run out. It is administered by the DSP.

Means Test

Your total household income is assessed. The DSP looks at:

If your partner is working, a certain amount of their income is disregarded. For 2026, the first €200 of your partner's average weekly earnings is disregarded, and 60% of earnings between €200 and €300 is also disregarded.

Housing Assistance Payment (HAP)

If you are getting Jobseeker's Allowance and need help with rent, you may qualify for the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) administered by your local authority. HAP is a social housing support that replaces Rent Supplement for long-term housing needs. You must be assessed as eligible for social housing to qualify.
